I'm starting a series of crafts that are possible for the Knot Sew Craftiest among us to do successfully. I don't even want to use the word "tutorial," because that sounds too grand and difficult. These are just fun or cool things that I've tried and not completely messed up. Believe me, if I can do it, you can too!
Our first KSC craft is: Melty Crayons!
If you are a parent of small children, it is a safe bet to assume that you have at least one pile of broken crayons lying around.
Annoying and fairly useless, right? Useless, that is, until you reconstitute them into muffin-shaped mega-crayons! Take a muffin tin, use muffin tin liners, peel and break up crayons, put assorted crayons into the liners, and heat them in the oven for about 15 minutes at 250 degrees, until they melt together in multicolored pools. Let them cool completely, and let the coloring begin!
The rating system for these crafts will be a measure of how easy the crafts were for me, an admittedly Knot Sew Crafty person, not what a normally crafty person would think. This Melty Crayon extravaganza gets a One Button rating, which means that my kids could easily do it themselves, except that I won't let them touch the oven yet.
Fun, easy, and not nearly as smelly as I thought!
We actually did a state test practice on a girl who melted her crayons because she did not like them. Those crayons are still lying around here somewhere mom.

This is cool -- we did this when I was growing up, only I think we just used aluminum foil... You have to be conscious of what colors to use, though, because if you add too many varieties, you end up with a dark brown crayon.

I remember doing these with my kids when they were younger--but we didn't use liners (maybe we greased the tin?). It seems they were nice and smooth along the sides, but they may have been a bit tricky to pop out of the tin! However you make them, they are definitely a fun, easy craft, and I love that they incorporate those crayon bits that kids usually look upon with disdain!

Fun! How's the starter coming? Bubbling along happily? Exploded? Well-fed? Forgotten? Made into bread? :)

Melty crayons are my favorite. In fact, maybe I'll make them at school this week....

Love it-can't wait to try. Had been thinking about melty things with our crayon tin, but not had the inspiration to make MUFFINS!!

That is the coolest thing I've seen all day!
(Granted it's 5:02am in New Zealand, but I am absolutely convinced muffin crayons will be the tops.)
