Tragedy in Cross River

The dark day yesterday referred to a horrible thing that happened in the next town over from us.  A man killed his wife, his two children, and then himself.  I did not know them, but many of my friends did.  They seemed to be a normal suburban family.  We are stunned and saddened, and grappling with how to explan such a thing to our children.  I wish I didn't have to tell them at all, but I do, because I know that they will hear about it at school.

It's too soon for me to take any lessons from this tragedy.  I'm just sad.

And The Make-My-Day Award Goes To: Ben Folds

Today, my inaugural Make My Day Award goes to Ben Folds, for continued excellence in songwriting, brilliant judging on The Sing-Off, and, most importantly, for responding to my question on Twitter!  It's embarrassing how giddy it makes me to think that Ben Folds took 20 seconds out of his day to tweet me...

My question: "What are rubbing seconds?" (He used that term on the show).

His response:  "minor second - two notes exactly half step apart. they rub for second as a passing interval. its just what i call em"

Did I mention that Beatrix has to get up at 6 this year? She's been really good about it, but it's not fun to go to the bus stop in the dark.

Also not fun? Mama expected to function properly at 6 am.
