--Jessica is having a Soup Swap tomorrow!  I'm excited to have some great new soup recipes for the Fall.

--I'm back up to 148 blogs, which feels just about right.  Under one hundred was impossible because I like to read blogs about lots of different things.  I'll just have prune ruthlessly every once and a while.

--I'm loving this post.

--As usual, Eugene Robinson has taken my feelings and expressed them better than I ever could.

--You know how all of the craft bloggers from countries that are not the US make amazing Granny Square and Ripple blankets?  Where do they find the fabulous bright colors of wool that they use?  I feel like everything I see in the States is a little bit blah.  I probably need to be prepared to go to good yarn stores and spend a lot more money than I am currently spending on wool.  Doesn't anyone make great colors that are not enormously expensive?

How excited am I for Hayao Miyazaki's next movie?  So excited that I won't even hold it against him that Miley Cyrus' younger sister, Noah, and the Jonas Brothers' younger brother, Frankie (the Bonus Jonas), are doing the voices of the main characters!!

And isn't Miyazaki himself quite handsome, in an older gentleman genius sort-of way?  If I weren't already married to the dashing and debonair CMR, I might've gone to Comic-Con this year and attempted to woo Hayao...

Paul Newman

Paul Newman has died.

I saw him and Joanne Woodward in the audience at a play last Spring. I couldn't tell you much about the play because I spent the whole time watching them.

I might have to watch Hud, Cool Hand Luke, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid tonight.

Totoro Song

If you haven't seen My Neighbor Totoro by Hiyao Miyazaki, you might want to consider staying in the air-conditioning and watching it this weekend. I have seen it about 25 times because Willa adores it. I don't quite know how to describe it, so I won't even try, except to say that it's strange and beautiful and touching and quite funny, too.

Willa loves Totoro so much that I might try to make her this.

Practically Perfect in Every Way

Home: A Memoir of My Early Years is the title of the new book by Julie Andrews. It is sitting on my nighttable and I plan to start it today. I have such deep affection for Julie Andrews. She is definitely on the Ultimate List of Reasons to be Happy to be Alive, right up there with sunshine, puppies and Gummy Bears.

In college, I used to rent videos from a local drug store, and very often, in times of stress, I would rent Mary Poppins. It got to the point where the teenager behind the counter would see me coming across the store and just hand it to me. I have it on DVD now, and, while I don't have a lot of time to watch, I'm glad to know it's there.

For your enjoyment, I present Julie with her friend, Carol Burnett at Carnegie Hall. I saw Carol Burnett last year at a performance of Sweeney Todd, and I really had to restrain myself from professing my adoration. I will confess, though, that I did spend most of the play watching her reactions instead of watching the play itself. Carol is also a very strong presence on the List, and Carol and Julie together is almost too much goodness to bear.
